Description
Fox knives are a very reliable brand. Like Maserin, Lion Steel and Viper, they reside in the cutlery town of Maniago, and they offer nice quality and that unmistakable Italian flair for design. They don't have very good distribution in the USA so most people haven't seen or heard of them. A comment from someone on Bladeforums sums it up, "
Their fit and finish is high, their construction always tends to be solid, and no they don't participate in the steel-of-the-week culture, but they do use good materials. Proper heat treatment and blade geometry are far more crucial to performance, and they follow through."
The Octopus Vulgaris is a striking fixed blade design by Tommaso Rumici and produced by Fox Knives.
The designer said, "Drawing the Octopus, I wanted to create a knife versatile enough to be interesting for various types of Fox customers: sporting, hunting, and military. The result is, in my opinion, an ideal compromise between portability and performance: a knife that will never be too big or heavy to have it with you when you need it." I think he definitely nailed it!
The handle is designed to lock into your hand which it definitely does. Textured G10 handle scales are firmly attached to the tang and an integrated finger guard helps with safety. Extra jimping on the spine is an added benefit when attacking your work with a saber grip. it feels solid in the hand like a natural extension of it. Superb design!
The 4.53" N690 clip point blade sports a high primary grind and plenty of belly, enhancing slicing performance of the Octopus Vulgaris. A swedge also aids in penetrating power and should help with cutting efficiency.
The pommel is made for striking, with an aggressive point and ridges for breaking things open. You can also find dual lanyard holes poking out of the handle scales for multiple attachment points. Speaking of attachment options, included is a versatile leather sheath with multiple straps for accessories.
N690
The cobalt-alloyed N690 by Böhler (not to be confused with the lower-grade N695) is a very reliable upper middle-grade steel Fox uses for a wide variety of projects. The fine-grained N690, which ranks above 440C, offers convincing performance data in all areas. It is often sold as N690Co – the "Co" stands for cobalt and describes the exact same steel.
